Andy Warhol

As famous for his ideas as his art, Warhol has variously pondered–that “art is what you can get away with” and “everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” Warhol based his art off of popular culture, and current events. Using the medium of silk-screen printmaking, he achieved to hard edges and flat areas of color in works like 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans (1962), and portraits of Marylin Monroe. Warhol was also a mentor to artists like Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquait. His style of art is now taken up by many contemporary artists such as, Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, Jeff Koons, among countless others.
